Thanks for the Memories

Monday, July 28, 2003

Six out of seven days each week, for almost a year now, I find myself cutting through the famed “NBC Studios in Burbank” on my way to work. Every time I do this I am confronted with a large sign that reads “Bob Hope Drive” and every time my mind instinctively, reflexively shows me a snapshot of the man performing a monologue, just at the end of a punchline, with his eyebrows arching. In that split second every day I think of my grandfather serving in WWII and that he was one of the men that fought to make, “this land that I love.” Every. Time. So … thanks for the memories.

Peppermint Patty

I find it completely incomprehensible that Peppermint Patty refers to Snoopy as “a funny-looking kid with a big nose.” How could she possibly not recognize that he is a dog?!

Book Learning

Tuesday, July 22, 2003

Google is beginning to have a subtle, but noticeable effect on research. More and more scholarly publications are putting up their issues in PDF format, which Google indexes as though they were traditional Web pages. But almost no one is publishing entire books online in PDF form. So, when you’re doing research online, Google is implicitly pushing you toward information stored in articles and away from information stored in books. Assuming this practice continues, and assuming that Google continues to grow in influence, we may find ourselves in a world where, if you want to get an idea into circulation, you’re better off publishing a PDF file on the Web than landing a book deal.
