Question: “What’s the worst thing that could happen to me if I skip jury duty?”

Answer: “Our records indicate that you have failed to report for jury service. Your group number was called to report to court and you did not report in. The Code of Civil Procedure, Section 209, provides ‘any prospective trial juror who has been summoned for service, and who fails to attend, may be attached and compelled to attend; and, following an order to show cause hearing, the court may find the prospective juror in contempt of court, punishable by fine, incarceration, or both, as otherwise provided by law.’”

It looks like after two years of trying, the State of California is finally going to get to see me in court …

How did the “order to show cause” hearing go? I just got mine and am not sure what to expect.

I called the jury hotline and rescheduled. Then I missed that one. Then I forgot about it for like two years. Then I found it in a pile of paperwork, felt guilty, and called them again. They told me it had been so long that they had erased it from their records.
