Flyboys, by James Bradley

Saturday, July 31, 2004

FlyboysI just finished reading Flyboys: A True Story of Courage. My girlfriend’s little sister gave it to me for Christmas, which is some indication of how busy I’ve been this year. It’s a fascinating book, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about WWII. It focuses mainly on captured Navy pilots and their tribulations on the island of Chichi Jima off the coast of Japan. It’s the kind of book that kids should be reading in high school, but sadly, I know they’re not.

Multiple iPods

Wednesday, July 28, 2004

next generationAaarrghh. I have just got to get the new one. My iPod quickly became my favorite toy. My girlfriend gave me a 20gb one for Christmas. I upgraded to the 40gb in January, and I listen to it daily. iTunes is even a damn good WinAMP and / or MusicMatch replacement, and Apple did an amazing job with the iTunes UI. Anyway … Can anyone tell me any sob stories about switching from a 40gb 3rd-gen to a 40gb 4th-gen? Was it shmoove? What happens to all my m4p files? Are there issues with migrating “authorized” songs? Talk to me, kids.

less than you hoped for

Wednesday, July 14, 2004

from me on your big day, love, isn’t this sweet? I’m breaking out and running blinded into the street. This one can’t wait, I’m so ashamed. Sorry, I regret to say that you have made such a big mistake. Still, I’m in line to see the hit parade. I was late. Why? I went to the bar. That’s kind of fucked up, seeing how I don’t drink. It was then that I realized, I’m the poorest of sorts, far less than you hoped for. Swore to uphold and be there by your side on the day that you reserved. Forget and run, I couldn’t damn you to the life I’m dreaming of. Sorry, I regret to say that we have seen better days. Still, I’m in line to see the hit parade. I was late. Why? Who’s at the bar? That’s kind of fucked up and oh, by the way, it was then that I realized I’m the poorest of sorts, far less than you hoped for.

Potter Mania

Thursday, July 1, 2004

Lucy Holden of Rowling’s publishers Bloomsbury said: “We don’t want to spoil the title but it has been hinted at on Rowling’s website, and we can now confirm the title will be Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.”

The fifth book, “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix“, sold 1.77 million copies on its first day last year.

It sold almost five times as much as the first day sales for the fourth in the saga, “Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire“, which was itself the fastest-selling book in history on its first weekend of publication in July 2000.

I have yet to read one of these things, and I only saw the first movie. Apparently I am alone in a crowd, though. One point seven-seven million copies in one day?! The “fastest-selling book in history“?! Insane.
