Pixies Still Cool

Monday, September 27, 2004

My girlfriend, Rob, Rebecca and I went to see the Pixies at “the Greek“. It was a great concert; they played a ton of stuff that I love. It was totally cool to see them still rocking after all these years.

I’m also completely hooked on the new Green Day CD, which is a surprise because I really just didn’t like anything they’d done until this. American Idiot, though, is just incredible. I highly suggest you grab it.

Head of SEC Officials Admits Timing Mistake in Vols’ Win over Florida

The Southeastern Conference’s supervisor of officials said Sunday the crew working the Tennessee-Florida game erred in handling the clock, allowing the Volunteers more time on their final drive, which ended with a game-winning field goal.

The mistake occurred when Florida receiver Dallas Baker was called for unsportsmanlike conduct after DeShawn Wynn was stopped on a third-down run with 55 seconds left in the game, with the Gators leading 28-27 Saturday night.

Bobby Gaston, the SEC supervisor of officials, said because it was a running play, the clock should have started on the “ready” — when the referee winds his arm — and not the snap.

Gaston said there’s “accountability with our officials,” but any punishment issued would be discussed with both schools and decided by the SEC’s commissioner. He said any punishment would not be made public.

Saturday Night Heartbreak

Sunday, September 19, 2004

It was a game of close calls, tipped balls that went for touchdowns, kicks that slid wide of goalposts. But in the end, it came down to one call and one huge mistake for Florida.

Saturday night was the first two seasons in microcosm. When you think they’re done, they rally. When you think they’ve got it figured out, something goes wrong.”

Seniors Rule

Wednesday, September 15, 2004

Planetdan’s collection of high school senior photographs is one of the funniest things I’ve seen on the net in a long time. It’s laugh out loud material and had me in stitches.

TrafficGauge

Wednesday, September 15, 2004

Now this is something cool: TrafficGauge™. It’s a PDA-type device that sits on your dashboard and displays up-to-date highway traffic. They have it for Seattle and LA. This is the sort of thing I always expected I’d someday be able to do on my Axim, so I’m actually a bit peeved that I would be forced to buy an additional PDA to get this kind of service … There’s no way I’d buy one of these right now, regardless of how nifty it is, because (a) it wouldn’t be worth the hassle of hiding every time I got out of the car, (b) I already have a much, much more useful PDA, (c) by the time I get a new car, this sort of thing damn well better just be in the dashboard, and (d) I don’t commute as much as I did six months ago. Still, though, it’s a pretty impressive product. They were advertising on ESPN, too.

Franken on Bush

Thursday, September 9, 2004

from an episode of Dennis Miller on CNBC:

Dennis Miller:  When Clinton was President, I found him to be a really reprehensible human being. I didn’t like him. … But on a day-to-day basis, him being President never really bothered me. I thought, “Well, listen, Bill, it’s a tough job. I’m behind ya.” I didn’t like him. I thought he was a bad guy, but I remember thinking, “I’m not gonna whine about it too much because it’s a tough gig.” If Bush is re-elected, will it upset your day-to-day life?

NOAA Satellites and Information

Wednesday, September 1, 2004

The threat of an earthquake hitting southern California is not really something that can keep you worrying all night. For all intents and purposes an earthquake is unpredictable. There is little to no humidity, and I haven’t seen a cockroach in four years now. I honestly must admit, though, that I miss this sort of thing. My uncle, aunt, and their kids took a forced vacation to Mississippi. I’m keeping my fingers crossed hoping that my mom and grandmother are going to be okay. Could Frances make it all the way to Gainesville? That’s what they’re predicting, but I doubt it. Kickoff is Saturday, for Zook’s sake.
