Can anyone tell me if I really need Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03 and J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3? These things are ridiculous. Each one is over 100MB! What a waste.

J2SE(TM) Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 (1.5.0.06) is out. =)
I don’t think you need versions earlier than 1.5.0.03, if version 1.5.0.03 is installed. Basically, it’s supposed to be backward and forward compatible. It’s about a 16MB download, but the fingerprint is huge indeed: ~75MB.
Now, if the question is about needing JRE at all… I know people who have neither the flash player plug-in nor the JRE installed, but some sites and applications are impaired. YMMV.
