My Sisters

June 21, 2002

My SistersI just cannot believe this. It is not every day that you get a chance to photograph the two most beautiful girls on the planet. It was terrific fun to get to visit with both of them last weekend. Of course I didn’t get to be with them as much as I wanted - and I probably never will - but for the short time we got to spend together I was just captivated. I love them both so much that it hurts. I love them and I miss them and I hope that I get to be with them again soon. (Click the thumbnail for a larger image.)

The Tober-Overton Wedding

May 30, 2002

click for full-size imageThe wedding of Melissa Overton and Ryan Tober was Saturday, May 18, 2002. I was the Best Man and had a terrific time. This is a photo of the Brothers Tober that I took shortly before the ceremony. They are three really great guys and I was honored to be in the wedding party. I shot almost 300 digital photos and some of them are, IMHO, excellent. I’m working on getting them all onto CD so I can send the images to their families; let me know if you’re interested in a copy.

Tricia Cagle on the Red Carpet

How cool is this? My girlfriend went to the V for Violet Fashion Show and Launch Party Saturday night and was photographed by the paparazzi!

Pictures of Me

April 10, 2002

What do I look like? I ask myself this often. In case you’ve ever wondered … I added a tiny photo to the bottom of the sidebar over there. (Scroll down a bit.) If you click it you’ll visit the bowels of my /images directory where you can find several other pictures of me.

Wouldn’t you like to have that guy working for you?

Graphics

February 14, 2002

mean hamburger flippingIf you’re searching for animated graphics for some reason, check out Kimberly’s Kreations. She has a boatload of them. I think that this spatula-flipping-a-hamburger is particularly menacing. Does it frighten you?

The Google image search feature is also very handy. I just discovered it today. What an incredibly useful resource! I didn’t know you could do that with Google. Trés cool.

DotPhoto

January 10, 2002

A few weeks ago I mentioned a service called dotPhoto. My dad has started to add a few of his amazing snapshots to an album there. Even if you’re not thinking of buying a print - although they’re selling them for the ridiculously low price of 29¢ ea! - you should visit the site to see how they are enabling digital photographers to sell their photographs on-line. I’m really interested in feedback about this idea. How do you feel about digital photographs?

Christmas Eve Kayaks

December 24, 2001

Kayaks on Prudence PointHere’s another one of my dad’s photographs. He’s been kayaking all over New England for the last year or so. He’s got a thing set up so he can have his camera on the end of the kayak while he’s … er … kayaking. (Y’know, there really aren’t any synonyms for kayaking.) I just think it’s a cool shot.

Becoming GeraniumI am testing the Upload File feature in MovableType 1.3 right now. This is one of my dad’s photographs. It’s a geranium in bloom. I thought I specified that it should be in a different directory when I uploaded it. Either I did it incorrectly or there is a bug in MT1.3. I’ll have to try again …

Photograph

December 20, 2001

snow fenceMy dad is a gifted photographer. He takes some of the most amazing photos I’ve ever seen. He recently acquired a digital camera and has been having a ball with it, I know. He has had several of his prints sell at art houses scattered across Rhode Island; they’re really that good.

For a while - when his printer and scanner were both working - he was making notecards from his photos and they sold well, too. We’ve been trying to find a way for him to sell some of his stuff on-line, and PrintOnClick might work. Apparently they will allow you to host images on your own site and include a link so readers can buy 8×10s (or any size you specify) of the digital file from their site. It seems like a pretty good concept, and I know there is some hassle involved in actually getting digital photos into a format (i.e. a physical, paper print) that a grandmother can hold and frame. I’m going to look into their terms and conditions, but everything appears to be quite legitimate.

My dad takes amazing photos.

I have dozens of his photos on my hard drive(s), and I know he has - literally - hundreds of them on CDs and floppies and filed and stored away at his home in Portsmouth, RI. I’m also thinking about making a blog for him to post his favorites. MovableType is certainly simple enough that I could teach him how to upload the files and write captions or something.

Coffee Shop Photo

November 15, 2001

coffeeA few weeks ago I bought a Sony CyberShot DSC-S50 Digital Camera. This is the coolest toy! I love it! I grabbed it on sale at Staples for considerably less than I could find it on-line anywhere, and I reviewed it at epinions.com and a few digital photo web sites before I made my decision. I’ve been snapping pictures of everything that even remotely interests me. Digital photography is - in my humble opinion - far superior to 35mm or APS.

See, I love taking pictures but I can’t stand having photographs. What the heck do you do with them all? I have stacks of prints scattered (literally) across the country. I never get around to putting them in photo albums or categorizing them or … They just end up in shoe boxes in closets and they add to my already-overwhelming sense of organizational failure. I don’t have to worry about that with digital photos. I don’t have to buy film! I can take twenty pictures of the same thing and just delete the ones I don’t like without having to pay to develop bad shots and without wondering if a shot is worth taking. I have a CD burner, too, so I can easily file digital photos however I want. I’m kicking myself for not having bought a digital camera sooner.

Print Screen

November 8, 2001

Ever wanted to take a snapshot of your screen? Well, hit the ‘Print Scrn’ key and a bitmap will be placed onto your clipboard. You know the clipboard - it’s that mysterious Microsoft netherworld where things go temporarily when you hit Edit | Copy or Edit | Cut.
Open up your favorite image editor, and then Edit | Paste it as a new image, and edit to your heart’s content. Then save it (or do whatever you want to do with it).
You probably already knew all that, right? … But did you also know that if you pushed ‘Alt’ and ‘PrintScrn’ that it would capture only the active window? Ha ha!

Nice People Swallow

September 7, 2001

There’s been a redesign at Swallowing Tacks. Elise is a great read, so if you don’t visit her regularly, now is the perfect time to start. Check out her awesome collection of Desktop Images while you’re there. My three favorites? Cocktail Hour, Fresh Hell, and Aloha

Right now I’m using this beautiful photo as my desktop. It’s a flower barrel on the edge of the lake at Uncle Richie’s house in Maine. (462k)

Fuji MX-2900

August 7, 2001

Dad tells me that he just snagged one of these at a church auction for $275. Nice. I can’t wait to see some photos. My dad’s a great photographer and I’m excited because I think with him being digital now I’ll get to post more of his stuff here.

I’m positively drooling over the Elph, but I don’t see it happening for a few months at least …

I just learned that most of the photographs at Ocean State Adventures were taken by my dad!

Way to go, dad!
