Tim

The Life and Times of TimIf you’re not watching HBO’s The Life & Times of Tim, you are missing the funniest show on TV right now. It’s a combination of Family Guy and Seinfeld, with a bit of The Office added to make it uncomfortable. And like The Royal Tenenbaums you need to pay attention to all the details that aren’t the primary focus: Make sure to read the signs hanging on the cubicle walls in Tim’s office and watch for stray animals on the streets of Manhattan. Tim’s “friend” Debbie — a hooker with a penchant for assless pants and mid-morning martinis — is jaw-dropping hysterical.

PS: If you don’t have HBO, you can watch several mini-episodes on the website.

Six Feet Under

Monday, June 6, 2005

Six Feet UnderTonight was the premiere of the final season of one of my favorite shows — Six Feet Under, on HBO. It’s really brilliant, this show. I can’t get over how every episode is just so freaking fantastic. I’m going to be a bit sad when it’s gone.

Thinking is basically what I do for a living.

I have been thinking a lot lately about how I used to never watch television. For the first twenty-five years of my life, if you had asked me, I would have said that I didn’t consider myself a tv-watcher, even that I didn’t really like tv (except for football, of course). In the last five or six years, though, I’ve become addicted to quite a few shows: Law & Order, West Wing, CSI: Miami, the Sopranos … I honestly think that some of the best production/writing/acting in media is on these shows, but I am also wondering if it’s really TV that’s getting better or if it’s just that I am getting older.

Television

Thursday, March 7, 2002

Six Feet Under is - by far - the best show on television. The series started again this weekend. My girlfriend got me an advance copy of the soundtrack and it’s awesome. In addition to several remixes of the title theme, there are 14 killer songs. I’ll be posting the ones I really like on my (recently redesigned) Song of the Moment blog.

(Law & Order is my other favorite show. Reruns are on A&E every night at eleven.)

Carlin

Thursday, November 15, 2001

George Carlin is one of my favorite comedians. Saturday night he’ll be live on HBO. Like most everything else in the world, it won’t be live for me in LA. Tape-delayed, baby. Get used to it. With luck I’ll catch the show after the Gator game. I found this quote over at Bondcliff.net and just had to share:

“The very existence of flamethrowers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, ‘You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I’m just not close enough to get the job done.’”– George Carlin

Hard Knocks

Thursday, August 2, 2001

Last night at eleven I caught the first episode of Hard Knocks on HBO. Now this is a reality tv show that a guy can love. I’m not a fan of the Ravens at all, but it was fascinating to watch an NFL team prepare for the beginning of training camp. (Tony Siragusa was deliciously funny as the veteran-who-hates-rookies and will no doubt be the best part of the show.)

‘Round Here

Thursday, May 10, 2001

yikes!Long night last night. I had one of those dreams that is so engrossing and active that you wake feeling as if you just finished something and are ready to go to bed. I managed to pop into #blogIRC for a few minutes for the first time in many, many months. Caught the end of The West Wing for my mom (who is on the East Coast and missed it and called and asked me to watch so I could tell her what happened) … saw The Sopranos … I think I may also be toying with the idea of catching a bit of a flu or something: my throat is sore and my internal temperature gauges seem to be alternating between too hot and too cold for no reason. I drank a half-gallon of OJ at work yesterday to prepare for a possible immunity challenge. Had a banana, too.
Friendly reminder: You have only a few more hours to get Mother’s Day cards in the mail …
