There is a secret to creating killer Smart Playlists in iTunes. You have to know what not to play. The best way to do that is with an “ignore list”. And I’m going to show you how to make one.
For several years now iTunes has given you the ability to use playlists themselves as parameters when building smart playlists. That means you can make a smart playlist that does (or does not) include another playlist. Why is this important? It’s important because — if you’re like me — you love to hear almost all of the music in your library, but there is a tremendous amount of stuff that you do not want to hear out of the blue.

There was a story this morning about gay marriage on LA’s 89.3 KPCC. I was infinitely more offended by the fact that reporter Kelly Wilkinson pronounced the word “rural” as “rurl” and the word “unfamiliar” as “unfermiliar” than I was about any part of the gay rights argument.

One of my favorite songs is “Radio”, by Alkaline Trio. (mp3, lyrics) My sister got me to start listening to this group a few years ago and I’ve since collected everything they’ve recorded. What’s really funny is that for the longest time I thought it was a beautiful love song. Part of the chorus is — I thought:
I wish you
Would take my radio to bed with you
Plugged in and ready to fall
“What a romantic line,” I always imagined. The rest of the song is so sad, and sounds so angry. But with that one line he’s saying that he wants her to listen to him singing to her as she falls asleep. I thought this for many, many months … until I actually read the lyrics one day. I was so wrong. He’s really singing:
I wish you
Would take my radio to bathe with you
Plugged in and ready to fall
He’s no longer in love with her at all. He wants her to get electrocuted! So. Yeah. Totally changed the song for me. Still a great song, don’t get me wrong. But completely different. Talk about misheard lyrics!

Doh! I tossed an airball this morning. I was listening to The Tony Kornheiser Show on ESPN radio on my way to work. Tony was asking if one of the actors from the old TV show Gunsmoke was still alive.
I remembered that one of my previous bosses, Kelly, created a site where you could bet on when “famous” personalities were going to die. I called ESPN (1-888-SAY-ESPN) and, miraculously, got on national radio with Tony K! I said I was “Dave from LA” and that he should visit deadpool.com to get his answer.
Unfortunately I was wrong. The correct URL for Kelly’s site is stiffs.com, not deadpool.com.
I had already arrived at my office so I didn’t even get to hear myself on the air, but I’m going to guess Tony ripped on me when he went to deadpool.com and found some lame Sept. 11 retribution site. Oh well.
