ESPN, citing a Gainesville Sun story, confirmed that Steve Spurrier resigned today as UF’s coach, presumably to make himself available for NFL jobs. The Sun’s website is down at the moment (no doubt under the load), but I think I can hear Tony Dungy in Tampa checking his voicemail messages to see if he still has a job.

The lead story at ESPN.com right now is the announcement by the Univeristy of Florida that Steve Spurrier is resigning. I am in complete shock.

Wow! I’m sitting here in LA with ESPN’s Best of Sportscenter on the TV and I just saw Steve Spurrier wish all the armed forces a Merry Christmas. That was cool.

“It hurts,” UF coach Steve Spurrier said. “We didn’t win anything this year. We had a good record, had a lot of good games, but we didn’t win anything.”

Documents released by the University of Alabama on Thursday concerning a recently concluded NCAA investigation into the Tide football program include a letter from Florida coach Steve Spurrier to Mike DuBose accusing the Tide coach and his staff of trying to buy off a recruit who had orally committed to the Gators.

They are 18-point underdogs, the biggest spread against them since 1988. They have lost seven of the last eight games against the Gators and haven’t won in The Swamp since 1971, when Fulmer played guard for Tennessee and Steve Spurrier was a backup quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers.
School officials have figured that it took Florida 8,227 seconds to score 56 touchdowns, an average of 2:27 on each drive.
Sally Jenkins: “Steve Spurrier violates an unwritten code among college coaches, the code that says they’re supposed to go easy on each other. It’s a code of mutual sympathy and commiseration: They have little job security, and their fates are controlled by undergrads, overserved alums and unreliable refs. So they don’t embarrass each other, or criticize, or accuse. But Spurrier habitually refuses to observe these niceties, and he refused to do so again last week, reminding us that he is equally the most infuriating and interesting man in football.”

Gators Tailback Considers Suit - In a statement Wednesday, Graham said, ‘I got tackled on the play. That was perfectly OK. There were two guys on top of me and I felt them against my body. And then I felt someone tugging on my leg. He kept twisting harder, harder and harder until I felt it rip and then pop. I heard some moaning and groaning from the guy doing it.
‘They need to learn you can’t play dirty and get away with it.’
Spurrier seconded that notion. The coach said he also saw tape of Dockett, in which he appears to try to stomp on quarterback Rex Grossman’s hand as Grossman was tackled out of bounds.
‘I have to speak up on behalf of Rex,’ Spurrier said. ‘His dad called me. He saw the clip. He could have ruined his career. We’ve got video on it. I’m not making this stuff up.’
Indeed, each day, new video of these plays pops up, and every replay leads to a different conclusion.

Steve Spurrier is still looking for improvement.
“We can play better, and hopefully we will,” he said.
He pointed out that of the five teams Florida has defeated heading into Saturday’s game against Auburn, only one - Marshall - currently has a winning record.
“The teams we’ve beaten - I don’t know how good they’ll be in the long run,” Spurrier said.

“High school football in our state is very good,” said Florida coach Steve Spurrier. “Football is very important here. It’s a place where high school players want to play. They like to play in Florida. They like the idea of competing for a championship.”
