Head of SEC Officials Admits Timing Mistake in Vols’ Win over Florida

The Southeastern Conference’s supervisor of officials said Sunday the crew working the Tennessee-Florida game erred in handling the clock, allowing the Volunteers more time on their final drive, which ended with a game-winning field goal.

The mistake occurred when Florida receiver Dallas Baker was called for unsportsmanlike conduct after DeShawn Wynn was stopped on a third-down run with 55 seconds left in the game, with the Gators leading 28-27 Saturday night.

Bobby Gaston, the SEC supervisor of officials, said because it was a running play, the clock should have started on the “ready” — when the referee winds his arm — and not the snap.

Gaston said there’s “accountability with our officials,” but any punishment issued would be discussed with both schools and decided by the SEC’s commissioner. He said any punishment would not be made public.

Stephens Out

Friday, March 8, 2002

A dozen powder orange roses arrived at the home of Jimmy Ray Stephens on Tuesday, courtesy of Stephens’ new boss - Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer.

Stephens, the former UF assistant and former rival of the Vols, was named Tennessee’s new offensive line coach Tuesday. He will be introduced at a press conference today in Knoxville.

“It’s exciting,” said Stephens’ wife Regina on Tuesday night. “It was a long wait, but he ended up where he was meant to be.”

Stephens had been unemployed since Steve Spurrier resigned at UF on Jan. 4. Stephens was not retained by new UF coach Ron Zook and had been the only member of Spurrier’s old staff without a job the past several weeks.

Stephens had been UF’s offensive line coach since 1993, the year after he coached quarterback Danny Wuerffel and Fort Walton Beach High School to a state championship. He was the Gators’ running game coordinator the past two seasons.

UT

Monday, December 10, 2001

Even if they beat Florida, you still can’t spell ‘citrus’ without UT.

Q. - What does UT football have in common with marijuana?
A. - They both get smoked in a bowl.

Q. - Why is the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and the State Prison in
Nashville?
A. - Nashville had first choice.

Q. What’s the best pickup line to use on a UT coed?
A. “Nice tooth, bitch.”

Q. How can you tell if a UT fan is married?
A. There are tobacco juice stains on the passenger door of his pickup.

Q.- How many Tennessee students does it take to change a flat tire?
A.- Just one, but they get 3 hours of credit.

Rematch!

Saturday, December 1, 2001

Rex GrossmanThe Houston Chronicle:

“You need a flowchart to keep track of all the subplots of today’s game between No. 2 Florida and No. 7 Tennessee at “The Swamp” — a berth in the Southeastern Conference championship game, a possible berth in the national championship game, bragging rights and a rematch of one of last year’s most controversial finishes.”

GoMemphis.com:

“The Gators have won 12 of the past 15 games against Tennessee and the Vols have lost seven straight in Gainesville. Florida is 68-4 overall under Spurrier at home, 39-2 in SEC games and 22-0 against East Division teams.”

Tampa Bay On-Line:

“In what could be a prelude to Pasadena, the Rose Bowl mantra will be evoked often before today’s Florida-Tennessee showdown. From 13th Street to Kirk Herbstreit, it’s sure to echo throughout the area surrounding The Swamp.”

Volunteers

Thursday, September 13, 2001

Mike makes a good point about the game this weekend. How hard is it going to be to hate Tennessee? How hard will the players play? I just can’t imagine. I can barely eat lately; I can’t even begin to think about tackling someone.

Bowden’s Predictions

Thursday, July 5, 2001

For the past decade, the Eastern Division has been a two-team race to the SEC Championship Game between Florida and Tennessee. They have had absolutely no competition from the rest of the division. This year will be no exception.
If Tennessee quarterback Casey Clausen was a little more seasoned and the game wasn’t being played in Gainesville, I might give the Vols a chance in this game. But he isn’t and they aren’t, so the Volunteers will have to settle for second. - Terry Bowden on the SEC

The University of Tennessee

Thursday, June 15, 2000

The University of Tennessee Vols web site is excellent. Here’s a typical headline: Lying-Ass Bitch Makes Obviously Untrue Allegations Toward Football Program Sometimes I just can’t decide … which team do I hate more? The Yankees, The Vols, or the ‘Noles? Ouch! It makes my head hurt just to think of all three of them at the same time.

special thanks to Bill Doran for the link
