The East is simple: The winner of Saturday’s Florida-South Carolina game wins the division and goes on to play in the SEC title game in Atlanta. The West, on the other hand, is a mess: All six teams have a mathematical chance of winning the division and reaching the championship game.
In the 1990s, Florida had twice as many appearances in the SEC Championship — six — as South Carolina had winning seasons — three. The Gators have won nine or more games for 10 straight years; the Gamecocks have done it just once in their history.
Holtz said Monday at his weekly news conference. “We might play our very best game and they may beat us badly.”
Spurrier said he is particularly impressed with South Carolina’s defense, which ranks No.1 in the conference and 10th nationally.
