If you’re wondering why BlogRolling.com never seems to show your site as recently-updated, it’s likely because you’re not pinging it. I’ve been using the BlogRolling sidebar for years and just yesterday I noticed that my own site never seems to appear near the top of the list. MovableType was apparently pinging the BlogRolling servers, but WordPress by default does not. To make sure your blog is pinging the BlogRolling servers, make sure to add http://rpc.blogrolling.com/pinger/ to the “Update Services” list on the “Writing” tab of the “Options” panel.
You also might consider adding the No Ping Wait plugin, which speeds up posting by moving generic pings to a separate process.
These are the ping services that I update when I post:
You know, I noticed that (you weren’t pinging) a long time ago, but I figured that since you’re so information superhighway savvy, you already knew about the non-pinging, and that it wasn’t an issue. But it’s always bugged me.
This is how lame I am – I’ll periodically check the blogs at the bottom of my blogroll for new posts. And every time I find one that’s been updated, I’ll think “That bastard. Why didn’t he ping?”
Side note… the more you type “ping,” the more it looks misspelled. P-I-N-G.
