Unwanted Software

June 19th, 2007 @ 6:02 pm PDT

Yesterday I became the proud new owner of a Dell D630 Latitude. Today I began the tiresome task of transferring my life from my old D610 to it. The old laptop was Anchor. (Previous computers were Budweiser, Guinness, and Corona.) The new laptop is Maui. Here is a list of the software that Dell decided to install on my new machine that I either immediately disabled or deleted:

  • Google Desktop
  • Google Toolbar
  • AOL Setup
  • Intellisonic Speech Enhancement
  • the “language” taskbar toolbar
  • Dell’s Wireless WLAN Card monitor

Sounds like a good start…. When I bought my new laptop, I reformatted & repartitioned my hard drive and installed Windows XP Pro… Ooops, bad idea. XP drivers did not exist for several of the laptops’ devices. Only Vista drivers. So, I recovered back to Windows Vista, returned it to the dealer, and bought the best laptop I could find that would still run XP Pro. Windows Vista? Okay, maybe next year.

I named my laptop Frodo. It’s small, durable, quite nimble in a pinch, and it is the proud bearer of the One Ring. And by One Ring, I mean Windows. And by Windows, I mean porn…lots and lots of porn.

If credit card debt or student loan payments are killing you, I highly recommend taking a look at SoFi. Their low rates and incredibly quick and simple application process might be just what you need.
