Zook Takes Over

May 3rd, 2002 @ 3:01 pm PDT

Florida fans feared that Spurrier’s high-scoring Fun ‘n’ Gun offense would be replaced by something more pedestrian. But Zook calmed their nerves by hiring Marshall offensive coordinator Ed Zaunbrecher. Thundering Herd quarterback Byron Leftwich averaged 352 total yards in Zaunbrecher’s offense, just 2.9 yards behind Grossman, who led the nation.

Last December Tennessee manhandled the Gators’ defense for 242 yards rushing to beat Florida 34-32 in Gainesville. Zook hired Arkansas defensive coordinator John Thompson, whose defense led the SEC in 2000.
