Two Tricks

Two great tips from annoyances.org: Restart Windows without Restarting your Computer Speed up system restart

RAM

My computer has been misbehaving lately. It seems to be crashing constantly and the performance has been muddy. A few days ago I downloaded Cool Beans System Info, a nice little app that displays free RAM and processor usage. I realized that even though I have 256 MB of RAM, it seems like it’s all

Journaling

The journaling script is a cms you can use to keep a blog. It is one of the original blogging systems and is still popular. It’s not as easy to use as Blogger, of course, but it’s worth a look if you know a little about the guts of the ‘net and are thinking about

eMail Messaging

Update 2016-03-18 — Boy, was I wrong about this one. In my defense, though, it was pretty awful to read email on your phone in the year 2001. “It’s the interface, stupid!” I got in a discussion recently about text messaging on mobile phones. I don’t understand why so much money is being pumped into

AutoText 2

Well I already made a bunch of changes to AutoText. Thank you so much, Leia, for beta-testing! Now there are four text boxes. AutoText will post the text in the selected text box to the open app. That way you can save several juicy bits of text for auto-posting. Please note that if you’re using

AutoText

I’m always writing little programs to make my life easier. One of the handiest I’ve created is called AutoText. This small (only 32K!) app sits in your system tray and, when you double-click it, sends a text string to whichever application has the focus. There’s no documentation or help; it’s pretty simple. Right-click the icon

Software by Design

Software Design has been on the ‘net for several years. Gregory Braun has written many great little apps for Windows and I highly recommend them. They’re all try-before-you-buy but are full-featured, too. FontShow is great and I have the Time Synchronization program set to run daily.

Windows Registry

The Windows Registry Guide is full of registry tweaks, tricks, and hacks to optimize, enhance, and secure Microsoft Windows. This is really a wonderful site. There are dozens of mini-tutorials to make Windows do all sorts of nifty things. I really like this place.

Systray

Nobody asked me to play (boo hoo) … but I thought I’d jump in on this meme anyway. The contents of my system tray are (left to right): Windows Task Scheduler Volume control InoculateIT – virus protection quicklink to desktop Adaptec DirectCD Diamond InControl Tools AutoText – a little app I wrote that inserts text

What Is This?

davidgagne.net is the personal weblog of me, David Vincent Gagne. I've been publishing here since 1999, which makes this one of the oldest continuously-updated websites on the Internet.

bartender.live

A few years ago I was trying to determine what cocktails I could make with the alcohol I had at home. I searched the App Store but couldn't find an app that would let me do that, so I built one.

Hemingway

You can read dozens of essays and articles and find hundreds of links to other sites with stories and information about Ernest Hemingway in The Hemingway Collection.
