Go Gators!

Great American Sharpshooter

I just finished a 8.50 mi run with a pace of 10'05"/mi with Nike+ Running. http://t.co/NoT6u3fB #nikeplus — David Vincent Gagne (@davidgagne) October 22, 2012 Eight and a half miles early on a Monday morning feels a lot like an entire marathon. I’m starting to think that the main reason running in the evening seems […]

Big O Tires – West Los Angeles

I traded my trusty rusty 2006 Toyota Tacoma 4×4 for a 2004 Lexus RX330 when we had the boy. (I got a really, really good deal on the Lexus at Jim Falk Lexus of Beverly Hills.) A few weeks ago we topped 90,000 miles on it and I knew it was time for a new […]

Long Hard Times to Come

I just finished a 7.01 mi run with a pace of 9'38"/mi with Nike+ Running. http://t.co/QIMJqr5W #nikeplus — David Vincent Gagne (@davidgagne) October 18, 2012 That was my longest run in quite some time. I was wrecked by the time I finished; I was really pushing myself the whole time. Just for the heck of […]

Somewhere Across Forever

I managed to hit my new goal of 3500 Nike Fuel points on Sunday, so I feel pretty good about that. (I did the P90X Shoulders & Arms workout in the middle of the afternoon.) After an early dinner at Lakeside Golf Club, my wife and I watched this week’s Saturday Night Live, part three […]

Counting Down the Hours

I just finished a 6.08 mi run with a pace of 10'00"/mi with Nike+ Running. http://t.co/KKOfC7HH #nikeplus — David Vincent Gagne (@davidgagne) October 11, 2012 Clearly I need to write more here to avoid this turning into simply a log of my running. It was chilly and misty at six o’clock this morning when I […]

Never Going Back to New Jersey

I just finished a 5.85 mi run with a pace of 9'43"/mi with Nike+ Running. http://t.co/w99yWKCV #nikeplus — David Vincent Gagne (@davidgagne) October 9, 2012 I had a good run this morning. I added a few detours to stretch it a bit. I think on my next trip I’ll add another loop so I hit […]

Death and All of His Friends

I just finished a 5.47 mi run with a pace of 10'00"/mi with Nike+ Running. http://t.co/MaWGhsAh #nikeplus — David Vincent Gagne (@davidgagne) October 5, 2012 About a tenth of a mile after the five mile mark, I tripped on a crack in the sidewalk and went flying. I was able to break my fall with […]

Death and All of His Friends

I went on a five mile run this morning. It was awful. I just finished a 5.35 mi run with a pace of 9'58"/mi with Nike+ Running. http://t.co/CPyF3QUo #nikeplus — David Vincent Gagne (@davidgagne) August 17, 2012 I just can’t believe that my mom is dead. It’s the worst feeling ever, really. Here are the […]

Why’d You Put Your Quarter Down on Me?

At this point I’m simply trying to see how fast I can reasonably run five miles without injuring myself (dramatically). <knock on wood>So far I’ve only collided with a single bus stop (in the dark) and skinned the outside of my left knee on a low brick wall.</knock on wood> As I rounded Westwood last […]

Scott Farcas Takes It on the Chin

You didn’t think I’d manage it again, did you? Joke’s on you, my friend. I, in fact, did take almost another full minute off my five-mile time last night. If you’re scoring at home, that also means that I ran twenty miles in seven days. Now I just need to do some P90X workouts on […]

Another Five Miles in Los Angeles

Okay, I don’t mean to sound like a broken record here, but I’m pretty proud of running fifteen miles last week. I did another five-miler right around sunset on Saturday night. At this point I’m going to do some research into the chances of a digital watch reporting time incorrectly, because I shaved almost a […]

Five (More) Miles in Los Angeles

Even though I was still sore as hell from my run Tuesday night, I somehow managed to knock out another five mile run last night. I ran my standard “local loop”, which is east on Olympic to Beverwill, then south to Pico, and then west to Westwood back to Olympic. I almost thought that there […]

Five Miles in Los Angeles

Last night I decided that I needed to get my butt in gear and start taking care of myself. I haven’t exercised in almost three months and it had been almost a year since I went for a run. So I grabbed my Nikes and my iPod Nano and hit the pavement. The heat wave […]

Monday Night Workout

‘Twas a painfully brutal session at the gym tonight with @kbakst. It’s been several months since we finished the Velocity Diet, and we’re both in pretty damn good shape, but we’re still lifting weights as if morbid obesity was knocking at the door. I’ve been more focused on keeping the rest time between sets at […]

The Velocity Diet – Week Three

This is day three of my fourth week on the Velocity Diet and at this point I am feeling pretty damn good about it. By this time next week I will be deep into Phase II of the program, during which I will get to consume a glorious healthy solid meal every single day. Right […]

Friday Five: Bally’s Encino

Encino GymThings That Currently Suck at the Encino Bally’s Total Fitness

  1. They refuse to post a sign at the front desk alerting members when there is no hot water in the locker room showers, which happens several times each week.
  2. When I joined a year ago there were multiple sets of complete ranges of free-weights. Recently, though, the dumbbells have been steadily disappearing at an alarming rate. It is now almost impossible — even when the gym is not crowded beyond capacity — to find a matched set of the same weight.
  3. The medicine balls have mysteriously been deemed to be an insurance risk, so you cannot use them to exercise without paying for a personal trainer to assist you with them.
  4. Although there are always multiple employees aimlessly chatting near the front desk, nobody is ever tasked with policing the free-weight area, so the few weights that are still there are never racked correctly.
  5. For almost a full year now the staff has ignored all of my pleas to get both of the Concept II ergometers repaired. (The flywheels, footstraps, and monitors are broken on both machines.)
The Velocity Diet – Week Two

We’re now two-and-a-half days into Week Three of the Velocity Diet, so I suppose I should post my update about Week Two. I’m not going to lie to you: Week Two was pretty rough. The workouts get much more gruesome and the desire to consume something other than protein shakes becomes brutal. But the change […]

The Velocity Diet – Week One

At this point Kelly and I are now officially through the first week of the Velocity Diet, and I have to be honest with you: It’s been tough. It is unbelievably surprising just how much I sincerely miss chewing food. I’ve now had forty-three protein shakes — 39 chocolate and 4 strawberry — and a […]

Hydrostatic Body Composition Analysis

On Saturday I met Kelly around 10 o’clock in the morning, deep in the Valley, to get our body fat analysis done before we embark upon the Velocity Diet. The good folks at Fitness Wave have a mobile testing unit that travels throughout Southern California. It’s basically a 28′ truck converted into a scientific lab-on-wheels. […]

The Velocity Diet

My buddy Kelly and I have been going to the gym for about a year now. I have always been in pretty good shape — I have run the LA Marathon three times; I rowed for Florida Crew in college; and I have been lifting weights pretty regularly for more than a decade — but […]
